The Things My Friends Say To Me
Well, in all honesty, it's really one friend in particular who is always giving me backhanded insults. No, I don't mean backhanded compliments. I mean she says things that aren't meant to insult me but always do. And maybe it isn't her fault the way it's translated in my brain, but she could learn to watch how she says things.
So I was squatting during marching rehearsal because my legs hurt, and I said, "Man, I can never last all the way through cause I'm so out of shape." And she comes back with, "Well I never have that problem because my legs are toned, and you know, exercise would really help that problem." There's more back and forth about it and in the end, she's laughing. At me.
Don't you just HATE that?! For some reason, your friend laughs so it won't turn awkward? Someone tell me I'm not the only one who goes through this!!
I wanted to just let her have it. But, being the mature one of the pair, I decide to handle it in the way my mommy and daddy always taught me to. An hour later I say, "It hurt my feelings when you said that thing about your legs being toned and that you assumed I didn't exercise." Yes, she made some excuses, but for the most part, it was very effective! I got the intended response- "I didn't know it offended you. I'm sorry." SUCCESS!!
So the moral of the story is this: if you have a friend you intend on keeping for a while, and every now and then they piss you off, just do what every elementary school counselor says to do, and if they actually care then they'll listen to what you say. Unless you're a guy. Then I have no clue how it's gonna work.
