Ecofeminism From A Christian Perspective
Ecofeminism is a term I stumbled upon about a month ago, and I thought it was very interesting. It's feminism and ecology mixed together. The environment has been oppressed by capitalism in the same way that women have been oppressed by the patriarchy, so women should defend themselves as well as the earth. And then some people think the earth is a female anyway (Mother Earth), so it's almost our responsibility to look out for "her".
The funny thing about this brand of feminism is that it crosses into a field of spiritual belief, namely the ideas that we need to give back to the earth and that it acts as a sort of parent to us so we should honor it. The more extreme views include beliefs in the healing power of nature and all of those things, so it touches on how there is a link between nature and womanhood, suggesting that women are more in tune with nature than anything else. I suppose I can see it a little bit, if the moon does indeed affect our menstrual cycles. But I can't think of anything hindering a man from being just as "in touch with nature" as a woman. It doesn't make sense to me.
